Burning Your Soy Candle
Important information regarding your First Burn: Soy Candle Memory
Natural soy wax has a memory and should be permitted to achieve a full melt pool when burned for the first time. A full melt pool is achieved when the top layer of wax becomes melted from the wick to the container. If the candle does not obtain that full melt pool on the first burn, all subsequent melt pools will never surpass the distance of the first melt pool, known as tunnelling. In order to achieve a full melt pool, the candle should be burned one (1) hour for every inch of its diameter.
- Prior to lighting our soy candle, trim the wick to roughly a ¼ inch to prevent the candle from smoking and burning faster.
- Soy candles will produce very little soot compared to paraffin candles. A room with good ventilation should be used when burning any type of candle.
- Always allow the candle to cool and harden prior to relighting.
- Prior to relighting, trim the wick to ¼ inch.
- Keep the wax pool free of all debris, i.e. wick trimmings.
- A soy candle burn time should never exceed more than 4 hours.
Our Natural Soy Wax Product
Oak Ridge combines a lead-free cotton wick with our natural soy wax in an effort to promote a healthier burn. The natural soy wax used in all of our products is environmentally friendly.
Our candles are made of 100% vegetable ingredients. Paraffin wax, toxins and carcinogens will never be found in an Oak Ridge candle. Therefore, our candles are a healthier alternative to most other candles sold in stores or on the web. We have found that numerous soy candles are actually a blend, unless the manufacturer indicates their process incorporates an “eco friendly” or “natural” soy wax. It’s a common practice to blend soy wax with a paraffin wax. We find a blend using a paraffin wax defeats the whole purpose of purchasing a soy wax candle.
The Soy Wax Myth
Myth 1: Soot-Free
Numerous parties have been known to state that no soot is produced upon burning soy candles.
Response: Soy candles produce very little soot as compared to paraffin candles, but still a small amount of soot is typically present.
Myth 2: Soy Wax Pillars
Response: Soy wax is a soft wax and cannot be molded into a pillar. If the pillar candle states "soy wax", there is a high probability the soy wax is blended with another wax.
Understanding Paraffin Wax
Paraffin wax, a by-product of petroleum, is created when companies refine petroleum to make gasoline. Petro-carbon soot is released into the air as a paraffin candle burns. Therefore, the emissions from paraffin candles could be as dangerous as inhaling the cigarette smoke from an individual sitting next to you.
